Dance unites us all, transcending borders and cultures to tell stories and express emotions in powerful ways. Through its golden and expressive form, we gain insight into history, traditions, and the soul of communities. By celebrating captivating performances, mesmerizing rhythms, and dazzling costumes, dance fosters a deeper awareness of its vibrant role in shaping our shared experiences.
From March 14 to 16, Toronto will be treated to a breathtaking performance of Tango After Dark, a theatrical showcase that brings the heart of Argentina to the stage. Known for its sensuous appeal, intricate footwork, and passionate expression, Tango After Dark celebrates tango in its most authentic form. The production features the virtuosic choreography of renowned tango star Germán Cornejo, whose work has captivated audiences worldwide, including Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and Simon Cowell.
With his extensive experience, Cornejo leads a world-class troupe of dancers, accompanied by live music from two vocalists and seven on-stage musicians. The production also features compositions from legendary Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, offering an unforgettable tribute to Buenos Aires’ vibrant nightlife.
Cornejo shares with The Wedding Planner and Lifestyle Magazine what audiences can anticipate from the sultry performances, highlighting tango’s cultural significance as a cornerstone of Argentina’s national identity and its impact on global dance forms.
“Tango is not just my passion; it’s my life. Having dedicated myself to this art form for as long as I can remember, Tango After Dark is a reflection of everything tango means to me: its fire and its elegance. Tango is in our blood—it tells the story of our history, our struggles, our triumphs, and our evolution as a culture,” Cornejo shares. “Through this production, I want audiences to experience tango as more than just a dance. It is an emotion, a language without words, and an art form that continues to shape and inspire dance worldwide.”
Tango, which originated in Argentina and Uruguay, has become an influential dance style celebrated globally. Recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for its cultural significance, tango encourages dialogue and celebrates diversity. Cornejo tells us about his choreography and working alongside remarkable dancers like Gisela Galeassi, which brings out the intense passion and precision that define tango.
“Growing up in Argentina and performing on some of the world’s greatest stages, I’ve always aimed to honor the traditions of tango while pushing its boundaries. The high-energy intensity you see in my work comes from my belief that tango is constantly evolving—it’s not static; it’s alive. It breathes, transforms, and that energy is at the core of my work,” says Cornejo. “When we dance, we don’t just execute steps; we embody the music, the rhythm, and the emotion. That is the essence of tango, and that is what I hope every audience feels when they experience Tango After Dark.”
Tango After Dark will be performed at the iconic Winter Garden Theatre, offering an electrifying experience. Don’t miss this chance to witness the magic of tango. For more information about tickets, visit the official website.
